In this tutorial we'll talk about what are the correct levels to keep at times during our mixing sessions.

Whether you're planning on sending your awesome mix to a mastering house or selling your beats online, you need to leave some degree of headroom (usually expressed in db) for the engineer to add their own chain of processing.

If you squash your audio to the maximum at the mixing stage, the mastering engineer won't have any room to breathe and they'll probably ask you to re-send the file without your output processing.

It's important to keep an eye out for the meter at any time - as we all know, digital distortion is bad for so many reasons!

When I mix I usually use the following steps that I know will leave me (and the mastering engineer afterwards) enough room to play with the output processing:

1. Leave about -12/10db of headroom during the production stage as you never know what instrument you'll adding after that might distort your output channel. It's good practice to leave enough headroom.

2. Mix the song/beat. Try to remain within the -6/3db range.

3. Add the output processing. If you're just adding some buss compression or EQ try to remain in that -6/3db range so that the mastering engineer can have room to work with and add their own processing. If you're mastering your own songs/beats, add your final processing to reach the dreaded 0db without distorting or compromising your mix too much!
